Good communication among people is the first step in global understanding and peace.  With this in mind, Cheltenham offers an extensive world languages program which emphasizes aural comprehension, oral expression, reading comprehension, writing skills, and an understanding of the people who use the language as their native tongue.  To that end, we have developed programs in which students of varying abilities will experience success.  

The World Languages curriculum offers courses in three modern world languages (Spanish, French, and German) and a classical world language (Latin). We focus on the 5 goal areas of Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities and prepare our learners to apply their skills and understandings while also bringing a global competence to their future careers and experiences. While the goals and purpose of learning a classical language differ from those of a modern language these National Standards for Learning Languages are equally applicable.

MODERN WORLD LANGUAGES

The philosophy of our modern world languages programs is to prepare students for language proficiency using interpersonal, presentational and interpretive modes of communication. We focus on the accuracy of the language, vocabulary mastery, communication strategies and cultural awareness.

LATIN AND CLASSICAL WORLD LANGUAGE

Classical world language curriculum, unlike its modern counterpart, focuses primarily on reading the ancient authors who have influenced the greatest literary minds of the last 2000 years. While the emphasis is on reading and comparative analysis, the methodology will focus on pronunciation, reading aloud, recitation and creative projects.
