Social Studies

With a particular focus on developing the critical thinking and communication skills necessary for students to be college and career-ready, the high school social studies department provides students with a diverse range of options and experiences.  Our core curriculum features two courses focused on international experiences, a U.S. History survey course and Economics.  World Cultures focuses on the political, economic, and social development of several non-western regions.  World History provides students with a chronological approach focused on examining a variety of factors over time.  A unique feature of the World History course is an embedded comparative unit featuring the U.S. Constitution.  United States History provides students with an overview of the political, social and economic developments of the United States since the 1850s.  Economics blends an introductory academic economics course with a consumer economics course to create a unique experience for our upperclassmen.

With the ability to take every social studies Advanced Placement course, Human Geography, World History, U.S. History, European History, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Comparative Government, American Government, and Psychology, CHS students can find the right amount of challenge to grow as college-bound students.  Additionally, the Department offers African American Studies, Psychology, Experimental Psychology, and Sociology as electives.  All of these courses provide students with a variety of experiences and opportunities for further topic exploration and individual growth.
